The project to build the Regional Library in Varna has long been a subject of both admiration and debate. Recently, the municipal government announced that a tender for the selection of a contractor will be launched in order to open the construction site before the end of July 2024. Now, as plans for the new building unfold, the Varna Library is poised to become not only a centre of knowledge, but also a beacon of sustainable design.
The new project includes the construction of green roofs and roof gardens – a step that marks a new era in public architecture and urban planning in Bulgaria. Green architecture, or sustainable architecture, is a design philosophy that seeks to minimize the negative impact of buildings on the environment by increasing efficiency and moderation in the use of materials, energy and space. One of the most prominent features of this movement is the incorporation of green roofs. Green roofs not only provide insulation, reducing energy costs for heating and cooling, but also mitigate the urban heat island effect, absorb rainwater, and provide habitat for wildlife. They also contribute to air purification and improve the aesthetic appearance of buildings by turning concrete jungles into green oases. Read more about the benefits of green roofs.
We design and build green roofs across the country. Check out our recent projects:
Integrating green roofs into the design of the Varna Regional Library is about more than just sustainability; it is about redefining the role of public spaces in our communities. By transforming the library into a living, breathing entity that actively contributes to the well-being of its surroundings, Varna will send a powerful message about the relationship between culture and nature conservation.
It is worth noting that Bulgarian architects demonstrated their brilliance in the international architectural competition, which gathered 370 entries from 66 countries, evaluated by an authoritative international jury. Although the grand prize was awarded to the Dutch studio Architects for Urbanity, the second prize-winning I/O architects strongly defended the talent and avant-garde thinking of contemporary Bulgarian architects.
Despite the challenges and debates that accompanied the new library building in Varna, a wind of hope and optimism is blowing from our maritime capital. Varna’s green-roofed library is more than a construction project; it is a symbol of hope and progress, and an inspiration for other municipalities to rethink the way they design and use public spaces. This project shows that Bulgaria is committed to adopting sustainable practices and investing in the well-being of its citizens. When libraries or public buildings with green roofs appear in other parts of the country, they will serve as beacons of inspiration, education and environmental protection. Building libraries with green roofs in Bulgaria is a visionary step towards a more sustainable, inclusive and vibrant future. It is a testament to what is possible when we combine innovation, environmental consciousness and cultural enrichment. And as we await the construction of the green roofs on the new Regional Library building in Varna, let us celebrate the transformative power of green architecture and the message it brings to our communities.
At Innova Top Green we offer design, construction and maintenance of green roofs. We are the first Bulgarian manufacturer of Sedum (succulent) mats and Substrate for extensive green roofs.
